You want to install a veranda in your home? Find out everything you need to know to choose and install it.
How to choose the right veranda?
Before choosing a veranda, think about how it will fit into your garden and its surroundings. Also think about the budget you have.
When choosing a veranda, think about the color of the panels and the roof, for example. You can also choose between different types of roofs: flat or sloping roofs, which are more suitable for certain spaces. Also, if the veranda is to be used year-round, choose double-insulated glass.
How do you install a veranda in your home?
To install a veranda, you must:
Choose and purchase the necessary products in advance
You need all the tools required for the assembly and installation of the veranda:
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Pencil or crayons
- Wood glue to install the wood frame and roof tarp
- Machine screws for the aluminum angles
- Screwdriver with drill bit
- Circular saw
- Hammer and chisel
- Hacksaw blade
- Masking tape
- Insulating tape
- Plastic gloves
- A spirit level
- Wood paste
- A paintbrush
- A carpenter’s pencil to mark the corners on the wood boards
- A chalk line that you can use to measure the location of your joist supports
The list is not exhaustive! Feel free to search for tutorials online or ask your salesperson for advice when you buy your deck.
Measure and mark the location of the veranda on your terrace
Base your measurements on the rule of thirds, which means that the veranda should take up about 1/3 of the deck area. If the surface is uneven, install a wooden frame to level it.
Attach the wooden frame
Work with a partner and use screws and glue to secure the wooden structure.
Install aluminum angles around the perimeter
Use glue and fasten with stainless steel screws. The veranda must be completely waterproof, so make sure there are no gaps between the aluminum angles and the walls of your house.
Install reinforcement panels
Reinforcing panels are used to reinforce the roof of your veranda. They are available in different thicknesses: 0.6 cm, 1 cm or 2 cm thick.
You can install them on both sides of your veranda: a horizontal or vertical installation is possible depending on your choice and the strength of your veranda.
Installation of the roofing sheets
Your roof will be covered with an aluminum sheet that you can choose in different colors. You need to lay it at right angles, so you need to join several pieces with insulating tape before screwing them.
Additional tips for installing a veranda
If you are installing the veranda yourself, use a spirit level to check that your base is level.
To give your veranda more stability, install joists under the wooden frame. The distance between each joist should be about 2 cm less than the distance between two bricks placed next to each other.
Finally, fasten the veranda floor boards with galvanized screws and work gloves.
